App Design for Social Change

Design Challenge: How might we design an app that helps people to meet their goals for gym attendance?

GymBuddy is an app that uses geo-verification to track people’s time at the gym. The app has four main functions:

  1. The app user can check in at the gym to log his actual presence at a gym. The app uses geo-verification to make sure that the user is actually at a gym location.

3. The app user can connect with friends and family to use his competitive edge toward meeting his goal. The “Buddies” tab lets the user see the rankings of other app users for (1) all-time gym visits, (2) this week’s visits, and (3) goal achievement.

4. With each check-in at the gym, the app user receives credits. These credit can be used toward discounts at their favorite athletic stores.
